CBD Oil For Pups
Happy Friday Fam! I am off to my very first moms weekend tonight and am pretty excited about it, also feeling a little bit of anxiety, guilt, sadness… the typical mama stuff. I plan on kicking my feet up and doing whatever, whenever. Such a silly thing to be excited for but when was the last time you didn’t have to spend two hours preparing to walk out the door?
Anyways, we’re all here to talk CBD so let’s get to it.
A couple of weeks ago Molli woke up with a really nasty limp. Assuming it was related to a past sports injury, we decided to just give it some time and see what happens instead of going into the vet. We have been giving her CBD oil for a couple weeks now and have already noticed such a huge change! By day two she was playing like she was a pup again and just last Saturday she did one of the harder hikes her little body has ever done. The limp still has not gone away (and after an intense hike she still needs a day off) but it mainly shows up in the morning and at night, no more random limping during a hike or game of fetch.
If you don’t know what CBD is, or think we’re just getting our dogs high, CBD’s technical name is Cannabidiol. It is derived directly from the hemp plant, and in some cases the marijuana plant. It contains no THC which is what gives you that high from smoking weed. I have taken CBD before (smoking and oil) to calm my anxiety during a tough day, it did nothing but ease some of the tension.
Now, I am no vet but from what I have read introducing CBD into your pups diet has such great health benefits. More than just helping ease pain, it helps calm anxiety, reduce inflammation, cardiac health, anti-nausea, some doctors even say it can be good during a fight against cancer.
Pain medication can have HORRIBLE and UNKNOWN side effects on a dog. For example, my parents Pitty Grace has arthritis and the pain meds prescribed by the vets essentially poisoned her. Her body responded to the medication by attacking itself. I will repeat one more time: I am not even close to being a vet, but I would choose to give CBD oil to my pups before giving them any other medications (if I have an option).
I know there aren’t many studies done, but I think the proof is in the pudding and I plan to continue on our CBD journey. If you have any questions you can contact me or check out the American Kennel Club site for more info.
